DALLAS, TX. – June 9, 2005 – The Dallas Advertising League (DAL) announced today that its board of directors awarded Frank Kopec the Mark Johnson Member of the Year Award.  Established as a memorial to the 1997-1998 President of the League who died in late 2004, this is the first time the “Eagle Award” has been awarded.

The DAL “Eagle Award” recognizes Mr. Johnson’s leadership, perseverance and good humor which was instrumental in bringing the Dallas Advertising League to financial solvency from one of it’s lowest points.  Under his guidance and care the DAL became, once again, a vital force for advertising in Dallas, the AAF Tenth District and AAF nationally.  The award will be presented every year to the Dallas advertising professional and DAL member exhibiting the greatest commitment to the industry and the association through committee involvement, time and resources invested, and demonstrated ability to make a positive impact on the organization.

Worthy recipient, Frank Kopec has been on the board of directors of the League since 1998.  In his tenure Mr. Kopec has created and chaired innovative offerings like Magazine Day, the Student Tour and a career program for high school advertising students used today in Plano High Schools. In addition he has played integral roles in DAL Luncheons, the AAF National Conference and DAL sports tournaments.  Mr. Kopec has also managed all fundraising efforts for the League’s AdRoast® since it’s inception which has resulted in over $250,000 for the DAL Foundation and the DreamFund.

A highly experienced media director for a number of advertising agencies, Mr. Kopec recently joined Tierney & Company, Inc., managing the company’s enthusiast group which represents magazines such as Motor Trend and Automobile.  “What a perfect spot for Frank,” said Steve Wellman, DAL president, “since he is an enthusiast himself.”

In recognition of Mr. Johnson’s commitment to scouting, each year the DAL will make a contribution in the name of the awardee to the Circle Ten Council Foundation of the Boy Scouts of America. A natural leader, Mr. Johnson was an intrepid Boy Scout serving on the district council, and proud to see both of his sons join him in the rank of Eagle Scout.  This commitment and achievement inspired the DAL to the recognize their member of the year with the “Eagle” Award.

“It is altogether fitting and proper that the member of the year be named for Mark Johnson,” said Steve Wellman, current DAL president, “since every year that he served he fulfilled that role.  In addition, I can’t think of a better recipient for this inaugural award than Frank Kopec.  He worked with Mark to achieve huge successes for the League and has continued to be an important part of the association.”
